According to a survey conducted by IBM, in which 1,700 CEOs from 64 countries took part, regarding what top executives want from their leaders, “Inspiration” featured amongst the top 3 answers. This was confirmed by a data analysis of 360 feedback data from 50,000 leaders assessed by about half a million colleagues. I am sure you are thinking right now “Well, they really did not need to do all that. Every employee on the planet would tell you that what s/he really wants from the person leading the business s/he works in is “to be inspired”.
I agree. So what does an inspiring leader do? According to Forbes, Inspirational Leaders communicate more effectively, they give more time, they share a very clear vision they lead by example and they embrace change and evolution among other things. They seem to be like having created some really compelling personal brands which they are very adept at communicating. It really sounds that simple.
You will be right in thinking that these leaders should be really outgoing and enthusiastic. According to the people conducted the Forbes survey, this rule, applies to only 12% of them. The rest take a different approach to leadership: they communicate a very compelling vision to their teams, they create a challenge for their team to meet, they link their vision to the corporate values thus creating an emotional bond….There are many approaches and they are all as efficient.
Can you be taught how to be Inspiring, after all? The answer the writers give is, yes. There is no pill you can take to become Inspiring but if one has awareness of his/her role, cares about his/her professional evolution and can have access to meaningful comments about their performance, it is truly possible to learn how to be Inspiring.
