A CV’s goal is to get us an interview. For that to be achieved our CV should create an emotional bonding with the prospective employer. Emotional bonding is created upon meeting a specific employer’s business need. Therefore our CV unlike our LinkedIn profile answers specific needs.
Length
In most cases a CV is no more than 2 to 3 pages long. This limitation does not apply to LinkedIn, which instead can give us the opportunity to elaborate more on issues we could not delve into on our CV. We can be more descriptive, more explanatory and more informative all within reason of course. So if an employer is thinking about inviting us to an interview on the basis of our compelling CV, then LinkedIn will seal the deal: most employers check what is said online about us, therefore a well written LinkedIn profile with more in depth information about our skills and achievements can boost our chances of getting that interview.
Photo
In most cases CVs should not bear any photographs. On LinkedIn on the other hand, a good professionally taken photograph is of the essence.
Language
The language we use on our CVs can be quite formal. However, LinkedIn being a social medium encourages a less formal way of interacting.
Destination
A CV must outshine dozens of others to win an interview for a specific position. Our CV “takes” us to the employer. On the contrary, through our LinkedIn profile, the employer “comes” to us, either through a keyword search, a common connection or a comment we made on a LinkedIn group we share.
Until next week take good care of your career.
